Introducing the Volunteering Passport: Verified Recognition for Every Hour You Give

· 3 min read · The CPD Accreditation Bureau

In short

  • The Volunteering Passport is a free online record of your volunteering hours, each one confirmed by the organisation you volunteered with.
  • You earn a verified certificate at 10, 25, 50, 100, 250 and 500 confirmed hours, with a QR code anyone can scan to check it.
  • Charities, NGOs, clubs and associations can register for free at the moment, and confirm their volunteers' hours in a couple of clicks.
  • Employers and schools can use the passport to track and recognise volunteering across a whole team or year group.

Volunteering teaches things a classroom rarely can. You learn to organise people, solve problems on the spot, keep calm when plans change and work with people from every walk of life. Yet when it comes to a CV, a university application or a job interview, all of that often shrinks to a single line: "Volunteer, 2023 to present".

That is why we built the Volunteering Passport. It gives every hour you give a verified record, confirmed by the organisation you gave it to, and turns your commitment into certificates anyone can check.

The problem with proving volunteering

Most volunteering goes unrecorded. Hours are scribbled in a notebook, tracked in a spreadsheet that gets lost, or not tracked at all. When someone later asks for proof, volunteers have to chase a coordinator who may have moved on, and charities spend time writing reference letters one by one.

For the people reading those letters, there is a second problem: there is no easy way to check them. A claim of "200 hours" is hard to verify, so it often carries less weight than it deserves.

How the Volunteering Passport works

The passport is built around three simple steps:

  • Log your hours. After each shift or project, add the date, the organisation and how long you volunteered. It takes less than a minute.
  • Your organisation confirms them. The organisation receives a request and confirms, adjusts or declines your hours. Only confirmed hours count.
  • Earn verified certificates. At 10, 25, 50, 100, 250 and 500 confirmed hours you receive a certificate naming the organisations that confirmed your time, with a QR code anyone can scan.

Your passport has its own number, and every certificate can be checked on our Verify page in seconds. Public checks show only your first name and last initial, so your details stay private.

What volunteers get

  • A free passport with a running total of your verified hours and the organisations you have helped.
  • Milestone certificates you can print, save as a PDF or add to your LinkedIn profile with one click.
  • Ready-made images and a CV line so you can share your milestones and describe your volunteering with confidence.
  • One record for all your volunteering, even if you help several organisations.

Whether you are a student building experience, a professional giving back, or someone who has quietly volunteered for years, your passport shows the time you have given in a way people can trust.

What organisations get

Charities, NGOs, clubs and associations depend on volunteers, and recognising them well is one of the best ways to keep them. The Volunteering Passport makes that easy:

  • Confirm hours in a couple of clicks, one by one or in bulk, from your own organisation account.
  • Invite volunteers with a join link or a QR code you can put on a poster or a sign-in sheet.
  • See your impact with monthly reports and a download of confirmed hours, useful for funders and annual reports.
  • Your name and logo on every certificate your volunteers earn, so your organisation is recognised each time they share it.

Registration is currently free for charities, NGOs, clubs and associations. Schools and universities can join at a group rate, and employers who run volunteering programmes have a paid plan. We check every organisation's details before approving it, usually within two working days.

Why verification matters

Recognition only has value if people can trust it. That is the same principle behind our CPD accreditation: a clear record, an independent check and a number anyone can look up. The Volunteering Passport applies that principle to volunteering, so the hours you give count for as much as they should.

Get started today

If you volunteer, create your free passport and start logging your hours. If you run or coordinate volunteers, register your organisation so your volunteers can have their time confirmed. Already registered? Sign in here.

Frequently asked questions

How much does the Volunteering Passport cost?

It is free for volunteers. Registration is currently free for charities, NGOs, clubs and associations. Schools and universities have a group rate, and employers have a paid plan.

Who confirms my hours?

The organisation you volunteered with. When you log hours, they receive a request and can confirm, adjust or decline them. Only confirmed hours count towards your milestones.

What if my organisation is not registered yet?

Log your hours anyway and add your coordinator's email. We invite them to register, and your hours are attached as soon as the organisation is approved.

Does the passport give me CPD hours?

No. The passport records verified volunteering hours. It is a separate service from our CPD accreditation.

How can someone check my certificate?

Every certificate and passport has a number and a QR code. Anyone can enter the number on our Verify page to see that it is genuine.
